Taiwanese period drama 'Gold Leaf' premieres on Netflix

Features the song 'You're Breaking My Heart', sung by Joanna Wang and orchestrated by me

Taiwanese-American singer-songwriter Joanna Wang has contributed a haunting, nostalgic cover of Vic Damone's classic YOU'RE BREAKING MY HEART to the hit Taiwenese Netflix drama GOLD LEAF. A period piece set in the late 1940s and early 1950s, GOLD LEAF centres around the daughter of the owner of Taiwan's largest tea factory, who must prove herself as a businesswoman following her divorce.

I transcribed and orchestrated Vic Damone's song (originally released in 1949, though actually based on a tune by the 19th Century opera composer Jules Massenet) to support Joanna's updated vision of the song, which features a newly-written verse sung in Hakka. You can watch the music video (which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views already) on YouTube. Check out those lush free-bowing violins!
